Winter Beauty Tips

During those dark winter months, the harsh winds, cold temperatures, and lack of outdoor activities can turn your skin and hair into a dull, flaking, brittle mess. However, with just a few tweaks to your daily routine, you can ensure that you maintain soft skin and hair. Here are some tips that I try to follow to get me through those cold winter days:

  • Dry air from indoor heating along with cold winds outside can seriously starve your skin and hair of moisture. If you have sensitive skin, you could invest in a humidifier, or try putting a vase of water or some plants in your room to up the moisture content.
  • Moisture moisturize moisturize. Take cooler, shorter showers in the mornings and be sure to lube your whole body as soon as you step out of the tub - the longer you wait, the more time that those droplets of water have to evaporate off your skin and take moisture along with it, but if you moisturize right away, that slight dampness will help absorb the moisturizer into your skin. Concentrate on hands, elbows, feet, legs or wherever you feel you have drier skin. Also, try switching to a more oil-based moisturizer.
  • Sunscreen! Even though you think you may be able to avoid this, wearing sunscreen in winter is key due to those cold clear days, and sunlight reflecting off the snow.
  • Exfoliate. You still need to slough off dead skin cells, but you could try using a gentler scrub.
  • Wear layers. Keeping warm protects your skin from exposure too. Pile on the scarves, hats and gloves.
  • Conditioning your hair more often, and deep conditioning it periodically will help keep your hair smooth and soft.
  • Limit your use of hair dryers or curling and straightening irons as the intense heat will hurt your hair. If you have to use these things, then try slicking on a protecting serum or spray first. Also don't over-do it with the hairspray as these products can contain moisture-zapping alcohol.
  • Don't over-brush your hair unless you really do want that frizzy static look.
